Golden Field Guardian – Labrador Wheat Hex (Settlers of Catan Inspired Dog Art)

Project Description:

Golden Field Guardian transforms a familiar board game element into a character-driven piece of artwork. Inspired by the wheat resource tile from Settlers of Catan, this piece features a cheerful Labrador set within a warm, textured hexagonal field—symbolizing abundance, growth, and reliability.

The goal of this project was to reinterpret a static game tile as something alive. The structured hex background reflects the geometry of the board, while the expressive Labrador brings personality and warmth, bridging the gap between strategy and storytelling.

This piece is part of an ongoing series exploring dog breeds as living embodiments of resource tiles—blending board game design with expressive animal art.

Process & Materials:
Stewart Semple Super Base
White 2.0 Acrylic Paint
Posca Acrylic Paint Pens
Protective Mattifying Membrane Coat Varnish
Digital refinement in Snapseed & Procreate

The process focused on layering bold acrylic textures first, followed by clean linework using Posca pens. Final adjustments were made digitally to enhance clarity and presentation for print.

Context & Inspiration:

Inspired by Settlers of Catan, this piece draws from the wheat tile’s role as a symbol of steady growth and resource generation. The Labrador was chosen to reflect those same qualities—friendly, dependable, and full of life.
