Shadows Beneath the Storm

Shadows Beneath the Storm is a traditional mixed-media drawing centered on stillness, presence, and quiet companionship. Three dogs stand together in silhouette beneath a fractured, storm-lit sky—allowing contrast, negative space, and restraint to carry the narrative rather than action or detail.

Rather than depicting the chaos of the storm, this piece focuses on what remains grounded beneath it. The silhouettes are intentionally simplified so that texture, atmosphere, and tonal balance become the primary storytelling tools.

Process & Materials

This piece was built slowly through layered traditional techniques:

Graphite watercolor pencils for tonal depth

Mechanical pencil for structure

Kneaded eraser to lift light and shape the sky

Water to activate graphite and create atmospheric washes

Acrylic paint pen for the hand-drawn border

Each stage emphasized balance—adding, removing, and softening marks until the image felt settled rather than forced.

Concept Notes

The goal was to create an image that feels less like a single moment and more like a memory—quiet, unresolved, and open to interpretation. The storm exists as context, not conflict.

This work is part of an ongoing series exploring dog-inspired storytelling through traditional media.
