“Catrick’s Gambit: Play Into His Paw” is a digital fantasy illustration representing Phase One of a two-phase boss encounter from my original game world, Woof & Wyrm.exe, specifically within the Barker’s of Ruin system.
This piece explores the concept of gameplay as deception, where structure and fairness are used to disguise control. The encounter is built on a hybrid of 30 and Left Center Right mechanics, presenting players with a familiar system that subtly works against them.
Concept & Narrative
Catrick the Cheat is not a reactive villain—he is a system designer.
In this phase, players believe they are engaging with a fair and balanced game. However, every mechanic is tuned to guide outcomes in Catrick’s favor. The goal of this artwork was to visually communicate that imbalance without showing overt action.
Instead, the focus is on:
Controlled posture and expression
A composed, confident presence
The quiet tension of a rigged system
This is the moment before realization—when the player still believes they are in control.
Phase Structure (Design Context)
⚔️ Phase One: The Gambit
A structured, game-like system built on chance and turn-based mechanics
💀 Phase Two: Escalation
Triggered after perceived victory, revealing the true nature of the encounter
This two-phase structure reinforces the theme of false victory and delayed consequence.
